Solamente una vez al año, el sol vuelve a estar en la posición que ocupaba el  día de nuestro nacimiento. ¡Es un día especial! ¿Cómo te gusta celebrar tu cumpleaños o el de tus seres queridos? ¿Tienes alguna tradición especial? Pues, ya mañana será el cumple de mi nene. Con el favor de Dios cumplirá siete vueltas alrededor del sol.

Llevamos unas cuantas noches celebrándolo, ya que por las noches le echo el cuento de El Niño de las Estrellas, cuentos que uno se inventa, ya te contaré en otra ocasión. A él también le gusta que le canten la canción de cumpleaños a medida que se va acercando el día especial. Para mí, nuestros hermanos venezolanos tienen la mejor canción de cumpleaños… es mi favorita. A mí me despertaban siempre con la canción de Las Mañanitas… esa también me encanta para estos días. Tengo la suerte de que crecí rodeada de gente que le gustaba cantar. Para mí, eso era lo normal. Nunca tengas pena de cantarle a un ser querido.. especialmente a tus hijos. Para ellos tu voz es la más bonita y especial de todas. A los niños pequeños les gustan las notas altas… ellos viven en ese mundo. Y no tenemos que ser perfeccionistas… canta con el corazón y ya está. Si me atrevo yo…¡ja ja! claro que lo puedes hacer tu también.

En cuanto a regalos… de pequeño …siempre me inspiró darle algún juguete que otro que ayudara a inspirar su imaginación. Cuando son pequeñitos no necesitan mucho:  un buen libro de cuentos de hadas y poesía, un muñeco o muñeca, conchitas de mar… Los niños tienen la creatividad de hacer de cualquier cosa un objeto de juego… una caja de cartón, unas sedas,  carritos de madera, las ollas de la cocina, unos frijoles secos…en fin… cuanto más simple y natural sea el juguete mas ejercerán ellos su propia creatividad. (Entre más hace el juguete… menos hace el niño…)  Unos sitios que me han gustado visitar son tiendas tales como bellalunatoys.com,  que fue creada por una mamá/maestra y sarah’s silks en https://www.sarahssilks.com/. Si conoces de algunos lugares que quieras recomendar ya sea en tu país o estado comparte tus ideas con nosotros.

En las escuelas Montessori tienen una manera muy bonita de celebrar los cumpleaños que voy a utilizar mañana. Con tiza de color anaranjada puedes dibujar un sol en el suelo en el medio de la reunión. O como para darte una idea, puedes poner una vela en el centro y escribir los meses del año alrededor…

Sacas una foto por cada año que se ha cumplido. Mientras tanto el niño, agarrando un globo del planeta,  camina alrededor del sol. Hablas de los recuerdos de ese año para el niño y todas las cosas que aprendió en ese año, y así vas haciendo para cada año hasta llegar al presente. Y cuando ya se llega al año actual los amiguitos vienen uno por uno adonde el niño y le dan la mano o un abrazo o beso para felicitarlo.

On your birthday…the sun will be in the same position it once was when you were born. This only happens once. It is a special day!! How do you like to celebrate your birthday? or that of a loved one? Do you have a special tradition? Tomorrow will be my son’s birthday. With God’s favor he will have gone around the sun seven times.

We have already started celebrating, by telling him at night the story, El Niño de las Estrellas, stories one just comes up with at night. I’ll talk about that on another occasion. And, also by singing a birthday song at night. He likes to hear this song as the special date approaches. In my opinion, the birthday song from our Venezuelan brothers is my favorite. If you have another song from your own country that you can share please leave a message here or on the Facebook page (TeachThemSpanish) and in this way we can enjoy all of the diverse songs for celebrating this occasion. Share with us also any other tradition that you have for birthdays.

I always woke up to the song Las Mañanitas...that one is also one of my favorites. I was lucky to grow up surrounded by people who loved to sing. To me, that was the normal. Don’t be shy about singing to a loved one, especially your own child. To them, your voice is the best of them all. Small children, especially, like to live in the world of those high octaves. We don’t have to be perfectionists…sing with your heart. If I dare to do so…ha ha…so can you.

As far as gifts, I didn’t  go overboard at all. They don’t really need much at a young age really…a good book of Fairy Tales and Poems, a doll, sea shells, paint and brushes. Children are creative beings that can make anything out of a carton box, dry beans, pots and pans…these are sure to fire up the imagination.  I have always been inspired to give my son natural toys that awaken the imagination, the less that a toy does, the more creative the child will be. One of the places that I’ve run to has been a store, which was founded by a mom/teacher, that is called bellalunatoys.com another one is sarah’s silks.  If you know of other stores that inspire you from your country or state be sure to share that information with us.

In the Montessori schools they have a special way of celebrating the birthdays with the children that I will use tomorrow. You get orange colored chalk and draw a sun in the middle of the room.

Take out a picture for every year that the child has had a birthday and have the child walk around the sun once for every year, holding a planet globe. While he or she is walking you can share memories of that year, what they did, what they learned, any funny anecdotes.  You do so until you arrive at the present year. Once they have walk around the sun, each friend comes by and gives a handshake, hug or high five and congratulates the birthday child.

Para el boricua no hay sonido más sereno que éste…

 

No hay necesidad de tomar té de manzanilla, ni untarse aceite de lavanda o ningún otro tranquilizante… no hay que hacer ma’ na’ que decir sus oraciones e irse y acostarse oyendo este sonido único de la isla del encanto.

Este fue el sonido inolvidable que me dio la bienvenida mi primera noche en Puerto Rico, a los siete años, cuando llegué con mi madre Cristina, mi padrastro Anthony y mi hermano Gio para empezar una nueva vida en una nueva tierra muy lejana al resto de la familia que se quedó en la ciudad de Nueva York.

Creo que no dormí esa noche. Me la pasé escuchando este lindo sonido y aprendiendo de este pequeño anfibio a empezar a vivir en harmonía en dos mundos culturales paralelos para el resto de mi vida. Tal vez a ti te pasó algo similar…cambios repentinos que te marcarán por toda la vida. Pero las cosas que se aprenden…

Según la teoría de Darwin, “no se ha identificado ninguna especie de peces fósiles como antecesora de los anfibios.” Esto me indica que tuvo que haber sido un pequeño pez muy curioso, enamoradizo o muy listo para empezar una nueva vida… al loquito que se le dio por tomar ese salto a la nueva tierra y la mutación de la especie.

Pero volviendo a mi amigo el coquí. Me refiero a mi amiguito porque es sólo el macho el que hace este sonido para delimitar su territorio e impresionar a la hembra. Existen 17 diferentes especies de coquíes, solamente 2 de éstos producen el famoso sonido “coquí coquí.”
Este anfibio tiene algunas otras características muy curiosas:

Empezando por el hecho de que el coquí nunca pasa por la etapa de ser “renacuajo o larva.” Los coquíes emergen de los huevos como adultos en miniatura. El macho se encarga de cuidar los huevos que pone la hembra. Los dedos de los coquíes no están ligados entre sí como sucede con las demás ranas. Pero el problema es que este amiguito nuestro está en peligro de extinción.

Por nuestra parte, nosotros trataremos de generar conciencia a través de un poema y canción que estamos aprendiendo en casa estos días que trata de este bello coquí que yo adoro. Es un poema ideal para niños de seis años en adelante. Puedes disfrutar dramatizando el poema, te buscas una ranita de cerámica, una piedra, una seda azul, un cojincito amarillo para el sol… diviértete con los sonidos, las sedas y movimientos que puedas hacer…en fin…

El Coquí Puertorriqueño

Había una vez un coquí

que vivía en una roca,

en una roca debajo del mar.

La roca

soñaba y soñaba con depertar.

El sol

con el viento

la tierra

y las olas

habló.

Y todos juntos a la roca

despertaron.

For the Puerto Rican there is no more soothing sound than this one…

 

 

There is no need to drink cammomille tea, nor to apply lavender oil nor any other substance to relax…there is no need for anything except to say your prayers and go to bed listening to these uniquely soothing sounds that are unique to la isla del encanto.

This was the unforgettable sound that welcomed me on my first night in Puerto Rico, at the age of seven, when I arrived with mother Cristina, my stepfather Anthony and brother Giovanni to start a new life in a far away land, far from the rest of the family that remained in the big city of New York.

I don’t think that I slept that night. I spent the night listening to the beautiful sound of this littlest of amphibians. Learning how to live in two parallel cultural worlds for the rest of my life. Sound familiar? Maybe you went through a similar experience yourself on your way to becoming bilingual.

According to Darwin, it is said that they have not yet identified any fossil fish as an antecessor of the amphibian. This leads me to believe that it must have been one crazy lil’ fish that was very curious, or in love, or too smart, the one that made that first leap to the new land and mutation of the species.

But coming back to my friend the coqui. There are 17 different species of the coqui, only 2 of them produce the famous “coqui-coqui”. It is the male coqui I believe that makes this coqui sound to mark his territory and impress the female.  And a good friend indeed he must be as he has other curious characteristics to keep in mind.

We will start with the fact that the coqui never goes through the tadpole or larvae phase. The coquies emerge from the eggs as little miniature adults. The male takes care of the eggs that the female lays. The fingers of the coquies are not wedged as is the case with the rest of the frogs. But the problem is that our little friend is in danger of extinction.

The initiative “Salvemos los Coquíes” of the biologist Billy J. Santiago, seeks to raise awareness about the amphibians in Puerto Rico and to provide information about its importance. For more information, please like his Facebook page.

We will do our part and help raise awareness with a poem and song that we are learning at home these days that has to do with the beautiful coqui that I adore. It is a poem that is ideal for children who are six years old and up. You can enjoy dramatizing the poem, find a little ceramic frog, a stone, a blue silk, a little round yellowish pillow…have fun making sounds, playing with the silks, and movements… and wing it…

Recuerda tus Raíces…Remembering our Ancestors…

Si a Bruno Hernandez, mi tatarabuelo cubano, no se le hubiera pegado la sábana, yo no estaría aquí. Eso me decía mi padre. Mi tatarabuelo, de Oriente, que era marinero, estuvo celebrando mucho un fin de semana en Barranquilla, y no pudo tomar el barco que lo devolvería a Cuba. Terminó casándose con una inmigrante holandesa. Tuvieron un hijo que se casó con Elvira, una mujer de descendencia judía.

Y por otra parte, si mi bisabuela de parte de madre, Eva, se hubiese ido a los Estados Unidos en la década de los 1940, con mi bisabuelo Rodrigo, quizás tampoco estaría contando este cuento. Mi bisabuela Eva, “Ma Eva”, le temía a los prejuicios de la sociedad de los Estados Unidos. Mi bisabuelo era un español pelirojo;  ella era una trigueña de Condoto, Chocó, de descendencia africana. Si su hija, mi abuela Elvia, hubiera crecido en los Estados Unidos, ella no hubiera conocido a mi abuelo Luis de descendencia india y cuyo padre había secuestrado a una Guajira que sería la madre de mi abuelo.

Y así, los cuentos abundan en mi familia. Me hacen pensar en los cuentos de las novelas de García Márquez. Que decía mi padre, ya se conocían de todos modos antes de haber sido publicados. “Lo que pasa es que él se me adelantó,” lo oí decir varias veces. Cada paso que dieron las personas de mi pasado tiene algo que ver con mi presencia en esta tierra.

Y también me doy cuenta de que esa herencia étnica incluye el indio, el africano y el europeo, incluye el católico y también el judío y el árabe. Aunque lo sepamos o no, a nuestros ancestros, los llevamos todos con nosotros, están en nuestro ADN. Ellos querrán ver el éxito de los hijos de sus hijos si es posible. Y como dice Chayanne en la canción Madre Tierra, con la bendición de tus ancestros tu llegarás.

También nos vamos dando cuenta de que la respuesta a ¿De dónde eres? puede ser mucho mas complicada de lo que nos imaginamos. Habla de tus ancestros, investígalas, cuenta esas historias… las necesitamos. Si es posible, consulta con un genealogista o Ancestry.com. Puede ser una bella historia. Nos ayudará a vernos de manera mas completa. Aveces esta conversación empieza con el fallecimiento de un ser querido, de ser así, es aún más importante tener una conversación franca y expresiva sobre el tema. Aquí hay un buen artículo que le puede ayudar en esta conversación.

Me gusta la manera en que la autora de este poema, Doña Gabriela Mistral, ayuda también a describir y a celebrar a esa madre de todos, la madre tierra que todo lo toma, todo lo carga, el lomo santo de la tierra … ella siempre está presente.

If  Bruno Hernandez, my Cuban great great grandfather, had not slept in…I would not be here. That is what my dad Heriberto use to say, may he rest in peace. And, if my great grandmother had immigrated to the U.S. in the 1940’s with my great grandfather Rodrigo, I may still not have been able to tell this story. My great great grandfather was a sailor, he had been doing a little too much celebrating on a weekend in Barranquilla, and he was not able to embark on the boat that would have returned him to Cuba. He ended up marrying an immigrant from Holland. They had a son who married Elvira, a woman of Jewish ancestry.

My great grandmother, on my mother’s side, Eva, feared the prejudices in the U.S. society back then. My great grandfather who was Spaniard was redheaded, while she was dark skinned of Codoto, Chocó, of african descent. If their daughter, my grandmother Elvia, would have grown up in the United States, this would have meant not meeting my Grandfather, Luis, of Indian descent, and whose father had kidnapped a Guajira, who would turn out to be the mother of my grandfather.

And these are the kind of stories that you hear in the family. They make me think of the stories of Garcia Márquez. My dad used to say these stories were really already widely known before being published. What happened is “he got ahead of me,” I heard him say. And I realize that each step that my ancestors took has had something to do with my presence on this earth.

I also know that this ethnic inheritance includes the Indian, the African, the European, the Catholic, Jewish, and the Arab. Whether we know it or not, they are our ancestors and we carry them through our DNA. They will want to see the success of their children and their children’s children, possibly. The artist Chayanne confirms this by saying: With the blessings of your ancestors you will get further.. in the song “Madre Tierra.”

We also begin to realize the answer to the question: Where are you from? Well, it can be a little more complicated than what we imagined. I invite you to talk about your ancestors, do research and tell those stories…what were they like?  And, if possible, consult a genealogist or Ancestry.com. It can be a beautiful story. We may see ourselves in a more holistic way. Sometimes this conversation will come up just after a relative passes away. If this is the case then the subject of the death in the family would be best dealt with sincerity and allowance for all emotional expression.  Here is an article on suggestions on how to speak about death with young children.

I like the way that Doña Gabriela Mistral, helps us honor also that other Mother of all…Mother Nature, todo lo toma, todo lo carga, el lomo santo de la tierra. She is there for us always.

Laughing with Spanish comedies is the best medicine…

A quick test to finding out if you have acquired a language or not is this…

This week we will give you an opportunity to practice those comedy listening skills. They are from all over the place, different countries so that you adapt to the different accents and humor, different sources as well… from mainstream media to the very creative efforts of bloggers and YouTube filmmakers that are benefiting us all with fun and exciting choices. Here is a sample of different Spanish comedies for each of the age groups, from young ones, to teens and adults.

10. Pero Like – You will get funny videos and tweets from Pero Like regarding Spanish humor and growing up Hispanic. They have different nationalities represented. The Cuban abuela character is hilarious.

 

9. Topo Gigio – This is for young children but I still think he is cute! Many generations grew up with this Spanish “Mickey Mouse” that originates from Italy. First appearing in 1959. He likes to say that he is “un ratoncito pacífico” and he prays to San Peppino at night.

 

8. Extra – Teacher Discovery produced a short telenovela for beginning Spanish students that is like watching an episode of Friends. It is about a young man named Sam who visits Barcelona to learn how to speak Spanish. As you follow along the plot you will immerse yourself in Spanish language and culture.

 

7. El Chavo del 8 – It may sound odd but this is a comedia about the trials and tribulations of an orphan child, the creation of Roberto Gomez Bolaños “Chespirito,” from the 70’s. Famous phrases such as “Pero no te enojes…” ,”fue sin querer queriendo..” , “eso..eso…eso…!”

 

6. Dairon – I don’t know how he does it but he does… Dairon Vasquez portrays different members of a Cuban family and is very talented actually in impersonating other accents, Russian, Chinese, etc. Great comedian that will keep you entertained with his YouTube videos.

 

5. Tres Patines  – Leopoldo Fernandez is a classic Cuban comedian known as José Candelario Tres Patines or Pototo. He is almost always in trouble at “La Tremenda Corte.”  I remember repeating as a child like a parrot…”¡Que cosa mas grande en la vida chico!”

 

4. Alvarez Guedez – A Cuban-born star, he talked about the Cuban exile experience of South Florida and was famous for his chistes calientes and “ño!” He had a hilarious radio program “Aquí está Alvarez Guedes” on 92.3 FM for 15 years in Miami.

 

 

3. Enchufe TV – This is a very successful YouTube comedy web series that was started in 2011 by Ecuadorian filmmakers in Quito. They use a lot of ironic humor regarding every day modern experiences but most sketches do contain profanity, are adult themed and not meant for too young of an audience.

 

2. Cantinflas – Mario Moreno was a Mexican comic film actor. He has been referred to as the “Charlie Chaplin of Mexico.” His words have been examined and talked about by philosophers, linguists and media critics. At one point his popularity was seen as a threat to the politicians in Mexico.

 

1. ¿Qué Pasa USA? – America’s first and only Spanish-English situation comedy… and it ran from 1977 – 1980. Produced by PBS, depicted the Cuban culture in Miami at that time period pretty accurately. It’s really worth watching all over again.
